THREAD paintings , WORKS On Felt And KNITLANDS
2016-ONGOING SELECTIONS



In Thread Paintings, I upcycle various found domestic fabric, such as old dinner napkins, chemin de table and handkerchiefs, and start to give them a new life as by using them first as painting rags. I then let the impromptu organic shapes of paint daubs and stains on the fabric guide my embroidery process, as I overlay and do free-flowing tracings of the geometry of various settings encountered. These depictions are inspired by geographic boundaries, the state of transits, vastness of landscapes, aerial views, shifting perspectives, and the interior and exterior architectural elements such as archways, windows of museums, restaurants, galleries, coffee shops, concert halls and theaters. Stitching has the cleaving and binding quality that helps me handle and maintain the gestural, paint-smeared areas as well as the traced imagery of places both in a controlled and arbitrary way. These processes allow me to delve into the nature of line and reflect upon the structural qualities of gestural techniques. Similar to the process of mental mapping, this merging of juxtapositions with medium creates a hybrid spatial experience that grants me new abstract possibilities stripped of any preconceived identity.
